Welcome to The Gold Coast, Official Theme Park Capital of Australia

Theme park enthusiasts are the oft maligned mad folk in the attic of the travel world, failing to comply with the widely held opinion that a gap year should be exclusively spent communicating with the spirits of the Earth and getting street food stuck in your dreadlocks.

Well, more fool them, because theme parks are AMAZING, and the Gold Coast is theme park capital of Australia. We’ve put together a quick and easy list of the parks you really shouldn’t miss.

Paradise Country

It’s important to point out that theme parks don’t have to be all rollicking rollercoasters and surreptitiously sawdust-secreted vomit. What matters is the theme, in this case, a sprawling Aussie farm. You’ll meet familiar farmyard staples like sheep, cows, and goats, as well as Australia’s idiosyncratic koalas and kangaroos.

Other attractions include stockhorse shows, gold and gemstone fossicking, and opal mining. Paradise Country is a microcosm of Australia from days gone by.

If it’s big rides you’re after, this is the place for you. Their names read like a list of straight-to-video (i.e. the best) ‘80s action movies: Buzz Saw, Giant Drop, Tower of Terror; your lunch is guaranteed to end up all over your shoes.

If you like things a little tamer, there’s family friendly fare in the form of Wiggles World, and an area dedicate to beloved DreamWorks characters like Shrek, Kung Fu Panda, and Puss in Boots, which is what you’ll be if you end up here instead of queuing for the rollercoasters.

Australian Outback Spectacular

If you expect the Aussies to offer a traditional circus experience, you couldn’t be more misguided. The Outback Spectacular is a... well, it’s a SPECTACULAR show based on great Australian folk tales of bravery and beauty.

So a man rides four horses bareback through a wall of flames in time with a stirring orchestral score, that sort of thing. You’ll even get a hearty dinner and pre-show entertainment thrown in. You know, in case you didn’t think the death-defying stunts offered your money’s worth.

Wet ‘n’ Wild

One thing’s for sure, the Gold Coast will definitely get you wet. It’s the ideal destination for a water park, because you can rely on the weather not to ruin your fun.

Escape the heat by plunging down waterslides at 50km/h, surfing a stationary wave like a badass (or falling flat on your face), or relaxing in a rubber ring as it floats around the lazy river. Just make sure you’ve packed waterproof sunscreen.

Remember in the ‘90s when computer effects were new and rubbish, and every game show on the planet used them to create nightmarish worlds of puzzlement and terror? Welcome to Infinity!

The park is an unusual collection of multi-sensual environments packed with special effects, sound fields, and visual illusions. With names like The Cyclotron, Electron Maze, and The Mystery Zone, you know this is something you don’t want to miss. Infinity offers a truly unique spin on the theme park.
